Chapter 17

There’s nothing like having reality slap you across the face. After running into Roc, all of the emotions that Justice had tried to put behind her came crashing down around her. Cool never made it out of the hospital. His injuries were too extensive and his body wasn’t able to recover. His death hit Roc hard. And just like the good ole’ days, Justice remained by his side.

“I know you’re not completely comfortable with me seeing him, but I promise there’s nothing going on,” Justice told Damien as she grabbed her purse and keys and headed toward the door. “I’ll be back in a few hours. Love you.” With that, she was out the door. A mixture of anxiety and confusion rushed over Justice every time she and Roc were alone but the familiarity he brought along with him was refreshing.

“Yeah. I love you too,” Damien said after Justice was gone. He’d been feeling uneasy about the amount of time Justice had been spending with her ex. He understood her helping him plan the funeral service and all, but something about the way this cat looked at his lady didn’t set well in Damien’s spirit.

“What’s up ma? Thanks for coming by,” Roc said. He was seated at Cool’s dining room table going over the final arrangements with Nina. Nina sat quietly, still in shock that Cool was gone.

“Hey Roc. Hey Nina. Sorry I’m late. I had some business to take care of.”

Roc turned the corners of his mouth up at her excuse. He knew where she’d been and he knew why she was late; her man didn’t like the fact that he was back in town.

“It’s all good. I was about to go drop of his suit at the funeral home. Ride with me,” Roc said.

Justice’s heart sped up and her mouth went dry. She knew she couldn’t tell him no. She and Nina didn’t really know each other that well and it would have been more than awkward to be left alone with her in the same house without Roc. And besides, it was just a ride. She thought for a moment what Damien would think if he knew she was riding around town with Roc. I’m just supporting him through his time of need, she justified in her mind.

“I never thought in a million years that I’d be burying my lil brother,” Roc said. Justice knew him better than anyone else in the world. He wasn’t afraid to let his emotions out when he was with her. “I thought for sure, he’d be taking this trip to the funeral home preparing to lay me to rest.” His tears flowed freely as he whipped through the heavy traffic.

“Yeah. It’s hard to imagine. But I’d rather focus on the good times. You remember that time Mary whooped Cool for being out of the house and he was so big that her lil licks tickled him and he ended up peeing on himself because he was laughing so hard?” They both laughed hard at the memory.
